Position Overview

As an Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) in the Surgical Care unit, you’ll work as part of an interdisciplinary team to coordinate patient care. This role requires a high level of administrative, scheduling, and communication skills to support veterans’ access to timely, quality care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the administrative support hub for surgical care services.

  • Schedule and coordinate patient appointments, follow-ups, lab tests, imaging, and consults.

  • Manage electronic waitlists and clinic utilization reports.

  • Serve as liaison among patients, providers, external facilities, and support staff.

  • Assist in clinic preparation and ensure pre-appointment requirements are met.

  • Resolve scheduling conflicts, handle cancellations, and monitor patient flow.

  • Communicate effectively with clinical staff, patients, and external partners.

  • Mentor new staff and participate in process improvement initiatives.

  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with VA policies and healthcare regulations.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of experience and education.

  • Proficient in written and spoken English.

  • Successful background/security clearance.

  • Compliance with seasonal flu vaccination policy.

Specialized Experience (GS-6 level):
One year of experience at the GS-5 level including:

  • Use of electronic health records and scheduling software.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and care processes.

  • Handling patient inquiries and administrative duties independently.

  • Professional communication across clinical disciplines.

  • Ability to prioritize work, resolve patient concerns, and support coordinated care.

Desired Skills

  • Advanced organizational and multitasking abilities.

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

  • Familiarity with VA scheduling systems and policies (preferred).

  • Experience in a clinical, surgical, or VA environment is a plus.
